GCSE results celebrated in Tower Hamlets

Pupils across Tower Hamlets have celebrated as they received their GCSE results, confirming our reputation as a borough of educational excellence.
The provisional result for Tower Hamlets is that 64.7 per cent of GCSE students earned five A* to C grades including English and Maths.
There is no national comparator at this stage as it can only be worked out when all results are confirmed later in the year.
A number of schools have seen step changes in their results thanks to the dedication of teachers and their support staff.
Last year across Tower Hamlets, 59.7 per cent of GCSE students earned five A* to C grades including English and Maths.
Pupils at Raine’s Foundation School were joined by Cllr Shiria Khatun, deputy mayor and cabinet member for community safety, yesterday (Thursday, August 20).
Cllr Khatun said “I’m so proud of all the effort put in by students, teachers and families over the year, and it was an absolute pleasure to visit and congratulate pupils on their well-deserved successes. I would like to commend the young people for their hard work and determination.
“Yesterday I met some wonderful students who have excelled this year and would like to thank them and their families for working so hard. I’m confident this borough will continue to build on its landmark achievements in education.”
John Bradshaw, Headteacher at Raine’s Foundation School added: “All teachers and staff at the school are extremely proud of the effort that our students have put in to attaining positive GCSE results this year.”
Umma Habibi, who received an A* and 5 As, said she was ‘pretty pleased’ and had passed in ‘everything she wanted to’, adding that ‘all my work has paid off and I’m proud.’ She will go on to study Biology, Psychology and Business at ‘A’ level.
Jessica Thomas who will go on to study Politics, Literature, Sociology and Economics said that she was ‘really happy that my hard work has paid off today.’
Ashraf Ahmed and Seun Sontan had done some science GCSEs a year early and received As and A*s. Seun said he was ‘elated’ by his results while Ashraf added ‘I don’t think I could get any more excited than this. I’ve been awake since 6amwaiting for results!’
Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs, said: “I have been very impressed with the young people I have met in the borough since becoming Mayor. Congratulations to all of those who have achieved what they set out to do when embarking on their GCSEs.
Cllr Rachael Saunders, cabinet member for education, children’s services added: “Teachers in Tower Hamlets are a credit to the community and this is reflected in the achievements of our young residents. The council continues to do everything it can to offer these people the best start in life.”
