Shop-owners have demanded withdrawal of a Value Added Tax (VAT) hike proposed in the budget for the 2015-16 fiscal.

Bangladesh Shop-owners’ Association organised a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity to press for their demand on Saturday.

Reading out a written statement, General Secretary Shah Alam Khandker said a Tk 3,000 rise in the yearly VAT on small and retail businesses was proposed in the budget.

“We want Tk 11,000 VAT like the previous fiscal year,” he said.

He demanded city corporation VAT be cut by Tk 4,000 to Tk 8,000, municipality VAT cut by 1,200 to Tk 6,000 and a cut by Tk 600 to Tk 3,000 for the other areas.

The organisation also said it wanted the withdrawal of VAT imposed on places used for commercial purposes.
